Hardware on a PC at least a good variety such as Processor, Ram, PCI
bus, IDE, etc... Similar to one of Memtest86 where it boots off the CD
into it's own customized OS.

Basically any solution that can boot off a CD that can detect possible
hardware problems.

Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) has a bunch of
testing tools, including memtest, some CPU testers, Lucifer system
