I bought a new 120GB hard drive this week so I could copy
my camcorder tapes to DVD's. I noticed that the new drive
is showing 63GB used even though I have deleted the
temporary avi files and there is nothing visible in
Windows Explorer. I have just formatted the drive to
regain the space.

Can anybody tell me why this is happening please.

It depends on what programs you are using to edit your video files. You
may also have your System Restore Files set to save on that disk as well
as your pagefile. To see all the files on the harddrive next time, you
can try this:

Click Start-Control Panel-Folder Options-View-Then check Show hidden
files and also uncheck Hide System files

I'm using Video Wave 7 part of Roxio Media Creator. I
already show hidden files, but not system files. I will
look.

Yeah, System Restore will eat up about 12% of your drive and if you have
installed Office, there may be an MSOCache on the drive as well. It
depends, but you may have your pagefile set to that drive. Finally, I
would use the disk cleanup wizard to see what it lets you remove

I have three folders showing, one is my DVD folder which
is showing 9.91 GB a folder called recycler 631KB and a
folder called system Volume information 0 KB. The drive
properties today say 9.98GB is in use which seems correct.
