Getting kicked off Internet

Gave my daughter a little used Compaq laptop with XP on it. When we first
hooked it up to broadband connection at her dorm it worked fine only to
later stop accessing the Internet. Tech support at the school suggested it
was because we didn't have anti-virus software on her computer. We
installed some but today the same thing happened. It was working fine until
it just stopped connecting. Could something be configured wrong in XP or
the browser?

Thanks.

Bob

>Sounds like a driver problem, probably if you have more

than one connection type open, try this---start > control
panel > network and internet connection(if classic view
just click the network connection) > network connection >
Now look very carefully under Lan or High Speed, you
should only have 1 the 1 your using, you may have 2 or
more connections. If you do you need to disable the ones
not in use by right clicking on the connection and
choosing disable. Also if there is a dial-up connection
not in use disable it also.Leave only the connection you
use enabled. Also on that connection right click on the
connection > properties > advance tab > check the box for
protect my computer(turn on the firewall) > Ok. Also
go to the internet explorer(even if it won't connect)
click the tools tab > internet options > connection tab >
put the bullet in NEVER DIAL A CONNECTION ,then the LAN
Settings button > check the box for automaticly detect
settings > OK > Apply > OK this should take care of any
problems.
