Hello,
I'm building a system that wont have a cdrom
or floppy attatched to it. matx board, cpu,
and powersupply. only needs to be around 12x12x3

Does anyone have a good source for a simple
metal box to put this stuff in?

Thanks

These all have mATX boards and are made from half a $39 Home Depot

Try inputting [atx micro tower case] at
http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en
You'll get a load of micro tower cases, almost
all selling for less than $50.

What about a hard drive? Cooling fans? Are
there really off-the-shelf ATX power supplies with
a dimension that measures 3 inches or less?

Many types. Look for SFX, MicroATX, Mini-ITX, and 1U server power
supplies. All very small.
