I'm a relative novice with XP Home Edition and i have used up nearly all my
pc's memory, causing problems of course! Any tips for freeing up space? I
regularly delete old programs, run defrag, delete temp files. I have a lot of
MP3 files and pictures on the pc. Is this what will be using the space?

installed in you computer is very easy to do..
here is a place you can buy:

javascript:TG_openBRWindow('http://www.tigerdirect.com/static/html/hdinstall.html','CloseUp','toolbar=no,menubar=no,scrollbars=yes,width=500,height=575')

Do not confuse "memory" (RAM) with storage (hard drive space). They are two
very different things.

Your problem is apparently with storage, not memory.

Removing (not just deleting) programs you no longer use is good to do,

That does nothing to free up space. At best, it can improve performance.

Good.

MP3 files and pictures both use up lots of disk space. You might want to
consider offloading these to CDs.

Thanks Guys. I will try moving pictures and MP3 files off onto CD and see if
that helps. I should probably have done that before anyway...........

You must be referring to disk space - not memory (RAM) - they are not the
same thing.

To clean up the clutter on your drive, and a few points to note:

1) Run the disk clean up utility, and delete whatever you don't want.

2) In Control Panel, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall applications
you no longer use.

3) Do a defrag which reorganises your files and folders and goes to
improving Windows performance. If you convert the drive to NTFS this will
help store files more efficiently and result in less wasted space.

4) Yes, multimedia and picture files do take up a lot of space. If you
still need these files, consider storing them on external sources like
external hard drive (or another internal harddrive that is not your primary
O/S disk) or CD, DVD's etc.
