FQDN versus simple domain name

My Win2K domain controller - call it abc.xyz.com - is running DNS for
the LAN. From a client machine I can, for example, "ping abc" and get
resolution and responses. But, when I "ping abc.xyz.com" the DNS
server cannot resolve this.

I also notice that in the DNS configuration tool on the DC, the DNS
server is named "abc", not "abc.xyz.com". Is this my problem? If so,
how can I fix this?

Thanks much for any assistance with this.

David

If you are talking about the DNS Management Console, no it it not a problem.
It only becomes a problem if in the System Control panel the server's name
is "abc". Your ipconfig /all tells you what your Primary DNS suffix is, this
suffix should match your AD domain name in AD Users & Computers, and you
should have a Forward Lookup Zone named with that suffix.

If you can seem to make heads or tales of this post the unedited ipconfig
/all, AD domain name from ADU&C, and the list of Forward Lookup Zones you
have in DNS.
