If you say that you're having it change "on-the-fly", then you probably used
(are using) "Auto Correct".
<Tools> <AutoCorrect>
And find the period (.) that's being replaced with the colon (

and delete
it.
If I were you, I would use 2 dots (..), and have them replaced with the
colon, so that you wouldn't have to go and change it back every time.
It's just as easy to hit 2 decimals when you're adept at 10-key.
