Problem sharing printer & files from desktop PC with Vista Home Premium with
XP wireless laptop. Please help !!

I can ping the wireless XP laptop from the Vista desktop PC but I get an
error message "Request time out" when I try to ping the Vista PC from the XP
laptop.

I have enabled file & printer sharing on both PC's.
I have put LLTD responder (KB922120) onto the wireless XP laptop.
I have done the Microsoft.com/technet/network/evaluate/vista_fp.mspx steps.
- Workgroup name same on both PC's, enabled private network, enabled file
& print sharing, created same user account name with same password on both
computers. (Tried creating same user account name without Admin rights with
same password on both PC's. Tried creating same user account name with Admin
rights with the same password on both PC's then without passwords.)

What is really strange is that on a few times the XP laptop will see part of
the Vista PC but will not see the shared files or the shared printer. I have
tried disabling Norton Antivirus on the XP laptop but still no luck. On both
the M/S Windows Firewall I have enabled file & printer sharing. One thing I
have not tried yet is disabling the Firewall on both PC's but this does not
seem like a safe way to operate my home network.

WE need to figure out why you can't ping. Turn off all firewall or security software on the Vista. Ping the vista by IP. Can you ping it? Or these links may help,

I found my ping problem it was McAfee. I had to select the accepted IP ranges
under Trusted & Banned IP's. Now both PC's can see files on both PC's however
my new problem is when I print from the wireless XP laptop it will only print
out to my shared printer connected to my Vista PC when I shut the Vista PC
down and then restart the Vista PC. Any suggestions?

Having a similar problem with a new Vista Home Prem, old XP Home system.
Vista can't see the xp system. XP system can see Vista but is told "network
path not found" when attempting to access. Trying to share printer and files.
ALL firewalls/intrusion are off. NetBIOS is enabled on v4 both systems.

Ben,

I'm sorry you're experiencing problems. Vista has some substantial changes
in the sharing and permissions model over that of XP in order to improve
security 'out-of-the-box'. Please review the TechNet article at the link
below:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx

After reviewing that, please let us know if you're still having problems.

Thanks

Disabled the UAC under user accounts and all is well. Everything working
perfectly except HP hasn't updated its drivers for Vista... soon enough.

I found the problem to my Lexmark X5470 XP wireless laptop printing to my
printer connected to my Vista desktop PC. I went to Lexmark website &
downloaded their "Vista" printer driver. Then reinstalled my printer with the
new driver. Works fine now.
