I can send and receive fax OK, the problem is that every couple of hours it
activates to answer an incoming fax, but there is no incoming fax. Because of
this I have to the (receiving) disabled, and enable it only when I am
expecting a fax.

The fax modem will answer *every* incoming call on the line. If you're
sharing a line between telephone and fax modem, you need to get a fax
switch.

Even if this is a dedicated phone line, that is, one on which you don't
expect to receive voice phone calls, these days you're probably getting
a lot of political and charitable calls. If you install a fax switch,
you can probably set it to just not answer voice calls. Then all you'll
have to deal with is the junk faxes that arrive periodically.
