No contract , pay monthly and its only £9.99 . From what I can gather from talking to various BT engineers its the distance from the exchange thats the cause of the slow speed .

Check your router stats page, from when you log into the router it should be there along with your sync speeds and noise margin.

Post them up and i'll have a look.

Even so, from your speed test it still looks to me like your on a 512kb connection rather than 2MB...

Put your phone number in the 'see how fast you can go' box on the BT Broadband site and it should give you an indication of what to expect on your line

I would treat ANY speed test as a guide and most with irrelevance.

Our initial test on your phone line indicates that you should be able to have BT Total Broadband with a likely maximum speed of up to 4.5Mb (Megabits per second).
No bad really.

hmmm, nice.

ah, still good though.

This is the slow time of day for me but it's fast enough for my needs. On a good day I hit 6Mb.

Thats true there are a lot of variables to concider, how busy is the site, contention etc. But speedtest is one of the better ones.

Two of the best ways to check your speeds are the links below....

http://speedtester.bt.com/ - BT's own seedtester, also tells you your IP profile which can be helpful for diagnosing slow speeds.

and

http://www.btopenworld.com/speedtest - Good for testing 'real world' download speeds. You get a choice of three test files of different sizes.
