All of a sudden, I started getting this error message on my W2k SP4
server.

Failed to open the Group Policy Object. You may not have appropriate
rights.
Details: The system cannot find the path specified.

This is the only server and it is the domain controller. I have seen
lots of posts on this issue but none seems to help me. I don't often
go into this area so I don't know when the policy started to fail. I
can still get into my AD.

I do have an error on my event view but I am not sure if it is
related.

The Netlogon service could not create server share . The following
error occurred:
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
Data:
0000: 7b 00 00 00 {...

Could these be related? Can I simply recreate my sysvol? Are they all
the same? Is there specific security info in the SYSVOL?

I really need to get this issue resolved, but I don't want to do more
damage.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Check to make sure you still have the Sysvol and Netlogon shares on the DC.
cmd prompt "net share"
If those are missing ensure you have the default admin shares C$ IPC$ admin$

Does this error occur when attempting to open both the default domain and
default doamin controller policy?

Thank you for your response.

I have the sysvol as shared. I will check check on the netshare.

The results of the netshare command:

sysvol C:\WINNT\sysvol Logon server share
NETLOGON C:\WINNT\SYSVOL\sysvol\patriotfr.local\SCRIPTS
Logon server share

Yes both the domain controller security policy and the domain security policy fail.

More information on the above problem.

I ran a Microsoft Tool named CPOTOOL. The results showed the following errors:

Errors found

I am not sure if this is related to my Domain Controller Policy not opening.

Again, thanks for the help so far and future posts.
