What would be a good light-weight external editor for XNews with support
for multilingual characters?

If you are trying to achieve compatibility with international
characters, I don't believe that using an external editor is going to
help[1]. It is an Xnews limitation.

More info/better help, ask at news.software.readers, the defacto support
group for Xnews.

[1] I could be wrong.

I think maybe one can manually add the right MIME type in the headers and
then use an external editor to edit the foreign characters in the body.

But please note that I didn't try it... ;-)

You could very well be right, JanC. I've no need for this functionality
so I can't really say, having not tried it. I *did* notice that the OP
made it over to nsr, where the topic of Xnews vs multinational chars is
raised quite frequently.

To the OP: if you find a freeware solution that achieves what you want,
please post back here.

Best bet is to ask at the readers group:
news.software.readers
