expert network help needed

Help Needed for Complex Network Connection Problem. I have tried to do all I
could with my limited skills.

My system: Soyo Motherboard SY-K7VMP2 with Athalon XP-2400 and 1G Ram;
Network adaptor on board Via Rhine Fast Ethernet Adapter; OS Windows XP Pro;
zone alarm and McAfee Virus program. I am using a DLink router with wireless
and Ethernet connections through a cable modem. Although i have a network i
do not share files with any otehr computer on teh network. I routinely run
Adaware and spybot.

The Event: I accidentally turned off the computer at the surge protector.
I restarted the machine and got a message on the screen stating that Windows
had recovered from a serious error/event. I suspect that the problem is with
teh DHCP server at least or maybe more.

The Problem: I noted that the network connection icon in the task bar had a
yellow triangle indicating that there was limited or no connection available.

What I did to solve this problem and nothing has helped so far:
1. Restarted that machine.
2. CMD/ipconfig /all gave the following results:
a. DHCP enabled yes
b. IP Address: 162.254.47.23
c. Subnet: 255.255.0.0
d. No default gateway
3. Next I ran Network diagnostics:
a. The only problem noted was DHCP invalid address.
b. The network adaptor was working Ok.
4. I connected another computer to the Ethernet to check the connection. I
could connect to the net work and surf the web.
5. I then reconnected the computer and then powered down the router and
turned it back on still no connection made.
6. I then performed a system restore still the yellow triangle noted in the
task bar. I undid the system restore.
7. I then conducted a system file check to determine if any windows files
were corrupted giving rise to the “windows recovered from a serious error
message”.
8. CMD ipconfig /release and /renew.
9. CMD ipconfig /release turned the machine off and then on again.
10. Right clicked the connection icon and selected repair. The process
started but hung up on renewing the IP address. Finally I got a message that
repair could not be completed because IP be renewed.
11. I repeated the above steps with Zone Alarm and McAfee disabled.
12. Reinstalled the Via Rhine Fast Adaptor LAN driver.
13. I was still getting the IP/subnet addresses as noted above.
14. Somewhere I noted a result that stated that the system was unable to
contact the DHCP server.
15. I disabled APIP in the registry so windows would not time out or assign
the IP/Subnet addresses. Still got the yellow triangle and no connection.
16. While doing 15 I noted that the adaptor settings for the ViaRhine
Adaptor were not correct: 1P, Default gateway, DNS, DHCP and DHCP server
addresses. I then checked these values on a computer that connected through
the router and manually entered the values in the registry. No connection.
17. I then manually entered the values in the network connection properties.
I did get the indication that a connection has made. However, I could not
surf the web and got the error message in explorer.
18. I then checked ipconfig and DHCP was not enabled and the expected
addresses were noted (the ones expected for a valid connection).
19. I then did a network diagnostics and received the following :
a. Network adaptor failed
i. Default gateway 192.168.0.1 failed
ii. DNS server search order failed (although the correct DNS values were
noted)
iii. IP address 192.168.0.108 passed
b. DNS server Failed
i. DNS search order failed
c. Default gateway failed
20. I tried to ping on the network. The tcp/ip was set to automatic
detection:
a. 127.0.0.1 ok
b. 192.168.0.1 unreachable
21. I tried after manually setting the tcp/ip:
a. 127.0.0.1 ok
b. 192.168.0.108 the computer ok
c. 192.168.0.1 timed out
d. the dns addresses timed out

I am not sure what I need to try next. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I would like to avoid a clean install of teh os and all my programs.

Go to Device Manager and un-install the Via Rhine Fast Ethernet
Adapter. Then, click Action | "Scan for hardware changes" to
re-install it.

You are all over the place with your registry edits. Not a good route
to go and hopefully didn't muddy the waters too much.

When you used the other station to connect to the internet did you note
the ip address [ipconfig]? Was this working station set for dhcp? You
used the same port and patch cable with the working pc as you did with
the non working pc?

Have you http'ed into the router and configured dhcp?

All indications are the nic is not working or is misconfigured. Might
want to set it to 100mb full duplex, which should be the default for
the router switch ports, in case autonegociation is not working right.

You could also be dealing with a corrupted registry and bad binding
issues. Scanreg/restore or doing a system restore to a point before
the reg edits would be recommended.

this did not help. I downloaded the lastest driver for the adaptor.

thanks for the suggestions.

Although I am making changes to the registry I backed it up onto the
desktop and restored it after every edit I made. that way I was working with
the baseline registry I had when I encountered the problem.

I did use the same router port and cable to check and confirm that the cable
and router were working properly. in addition, I checked the router settings
and confirmed that they were set properly.

I did go to another computer and checked its settings and then manually used
the settings i knew were appropriate for the computer that was not connecting.
