No, there are no error reports referring to either of these. There are no
"error" entries, just information entries in both "Application" and "System"
areas. There is one "warning" entry under "Application", and it has been
there forever, well before this problem started occurring:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 6/9/2009
Time: 3:17:23 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: DELLB130
Description:
Windows saved user DELLB130\Joe registry while an application or service was
still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's
registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no
longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

All the information entries I see seem to be associated with shutdown and
startup, nothing from the time that I come out of standby.

I assume when you say "referring to svchost.exe", you do NOT mean "Source"
as "Service Control Manager". I have many information entries in the
"System" area of the event viewer, but they all refer to stopping or starting
of specific services. None of the entries are errors or warnings.

Yes, this entry is set to automatic.

Thanks for the interest and help.

This suggestion will help eliminate the warning.

Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
Download details: User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
http://snipurl.com/5b61

UPHClean v1.6d readme.txt
http://snipurl.com/ko8m

This will not unfortunately help with your original complaint.

This link may help.
http://snurl.com/jsvku [www_google_co_uk]

The link is what prompted my last suggestion regarding Event Viewer. I
was hoping to shortcut a long trawl though a host of reports about
problems similar to your own. Many are specifically about laptops and
wireless.

Gerry, I have downloaded Process Explorer and have found something
interesting. I had noticed that the problem seemed to kick up about 10
minutes after coming out of standby. So today after coming out of standby I
did nothing except start up Process Explorer and sort by CPU% until something
happened. I then paused procexp and gathered data. I did have the AVG Free
8.5 user interface up and 2 Firefox 3.0.10 windows, but all were minimized
and I did nothing in them. I did not touch the keyboard until I paused
procexp to gather data.

What happened is that just after the AVG Watchdog Service fired up, CPU idle
went from 1%-3% to 14%-18%, even though I did not touch the keyboard or do
anything else. It turns out that about 8%-9% of CPU was being taken by
Process Explorer after that. I will try to post more details below.

I have reported this on the AVG Free forum, but since free users don't get
official tech support, I may not get any real answers. Also, even though it
appears that AVG Watchdog Service was the trigger, just as it takes two to
tango, it takes two pieces of software to have a conflict. Can't blame just
one side. Thus, if you have any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the data. If it turns out to be unreadable, I'll try getting it to
you another way.

P.S., I did have one "bad" boot earlier today, but the log was identical to
a "good" boot!

I use AVG 8.5 Free and the AVG Watchdog runs on my computer. However, I
use Outlook Express and not Firefox.

The AVG Watchdog service handles scanning of incoming and outgoing mail.
Guesswork on my part but does emerging from standby trigger a Send and
Receive by Firefox? If there are significant amounts of incoming mail or
a message with a large attachment the system wull be busy until all
incoming mail has been scanned. Attachments are more likely to generate
prolonged CPU usage. If I have got it right it is not a conflict. It is
normal activity.

Actually, Firefox and Outlook Express are not comparable. Firefox is a web
browser (equivalent of Internet Explorer), Outlook Express is an e-mail
client. In general, I don't run an e-mail client on this computer. We
generally do e-mail on my main home computer (where we use Outlook 2000).

Also AVG Watchdog Service does not actually scan the e-mail. I believe its
purpose is to ensure that all AVG services are running and not compromised.
The actual e-mail scanning is performed either by an AVG add-on to the e-mail
client for some clients (e.g., Outlook) or by a separate e-mail scanner
(avgemc.exe) for other clients that don't support add-ons (e.g., Outlook
Express, Windows Mail, Thunderbird).

In any case, what e-mail I do on this machine is done via Earthlink Web Mail
using the web browser of your choice. In this case AVG mail scanning does
not come into play in any way.

Unfortunately, it appears that whatever the problem on my computer is rare
as hen's teeth. No user and no moderator on the AVG Free forum has been able
to come up with any suggestions. It is very frustrating having virtually no
tools to track down what is really happening inside this system. It is
almost as if the CPU clocking gets cut way back, so anything CPU intensive
takes forever.

This issue is common and seems to have come back again. I am running the latest MS OS and the issue started with brand new machine. Running Asus k53E

For me I tracked it down to taskmgr.exe

This is not the only issue for there is a problem with IE in general - memory leaks even without the restart.

Have had to load three different browsers to get applications to work. Either no one has a QA budget any more or Google, MS and Yahoo can't program any more.
