Error Code: 0x80004005 after patching computer

I get the above error code after installing a raft of
security updates manually on a winXP home box. It won't
let anyone log on just comes up with the following error.
The error states:
A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking
the license for this computer
Error code: 0x80004005

The closest thing on the KB shows the same message but a
different error code. Has anybody else come across this
and if so how did they resolve it?
