Hi - have installed the AntiSpyware program... have
uninstalled and reinstalled... have updated and repaired
through control panel... have checked my permissions...
have tried the various suggested solutions using
gcasDtServ.exe but that file is not installed on my
machine - I have searched for it, lol. Am I looking at
old information - the posts first suggesting its use were
back in January - or am I being incredibly thick?

In Windows Explorer select Tools, Folder Options, View, Advanced
Settings and make changes as follows:

1. Check box before "Show hidden files and folders".
2. Uncheck box before "Hide extensions before known file types".
3. Uncheck box before "Hide protected operating system files".

Now can you find the file?

Thanks Gerry - I have already ensured that I can see
hidden files in the way you describe... the file with
that name is not there... nor anywhere on my machine
(have done a search)... I wondered if that file had been
renamed or replaced since the launch of the program.

Ho hum, I'm flummoxed!

From the distant newsgroup perspective, it certainly seems as though there
are things about XP Home's security settings that Microsoft Antispyware
doesn't deal with well.

I'm sure you aren't logged in as "administrator", 'cause that's only
possible in safe mode in XP Home--but that really isn't an issue--I think
you are what is termed "owner" which ought to be enough.....

And I believe that I've heard that neither installs nor uninstalls are
possible in safe mode on XP Home--it won't let you start the Windows
Installer process....

I'm perplexed--can't spend time at the moment. Blowing things
away--uninstalling, removing the installation directory--is what I can think
to try, but I think you've already done that.... You shouldn't have to mess
with the registry at all.

Thanks Bill,

My user account says I am "Computer Administrator" but
that's the standard level of access I guess - the kids'
accounts are more limited.

I think I have indeed tried everything suggested so far -
with the exception of the gcasDtServ.exe workaround...
because that file just isn't on my machine - despite
having "installed" Antispyware several times now.

Good luck with your stuff... I'll keep trying with the
Antispyware... you never know, lol!

So gcasDtServe.exe is never located on your machine after install? It
should be in the same directory as all the other files that get
installed..usually c:\program files\Microsoft AntiSpyware
