Have you checked the USB port with another device to make sure it is working
OK? Checked the USB cable for proper insertion at both ends? Gone into the
Windows XP device manager to see if you can see your scanner listed (and it
is OK) and checked your controllers and USB ports for errors?

Weird,

Same thing happened to mine this past Wednesday, I reloaded the
software a couple times, even tried moving scanner to another another
machine, still nothing.

I did notice that the scanner would try to initialize a couple times
before getting the flashing red indicator (the tube would also light,
go out, and light again briefly.

I thought maybe the scan mechanizism got dirty and was hanging up so I
opened the scanner and cleaned the guide bars but it is still not
working. If I get time this weekend I may try reseating the tube (scan
light).

I bought this scanner 2 years ago from the epson clearance center, it
was refurbished, so I got it for a good price . Don't know if it's
worth sending it in for repair.

In the meantime, today I ordered a couple more refurbished scanners
from the epson clearance center http://www.epson.com

a 2180 ($39) and a 4180 ($99) both with free shipping.

When I get them, I'll try swapping out my 3170 usb cable to see if that
was the problem.

If I find the problem, I'll let you know

If you are using the scanner connected through a hub, connect it directly to
the USB port on the back of the computer.
