Embedded spreadsheet macro doesn't run

I have a Word document with an embedded Excel file (pasted and shown as
an icon). When double-clicked the spreadsheet opens okay but a macro
that is linked to a shape doesn't run if clicked. It does run if
invoked using ALT-F8 and a non-embedded version of the spreadsheet also
works okay.

What's going wrong and how do I fix it? Is it caused by a security
aspect of Word? (I do choose "enable macros" when Excel's dialog box
pops-up before the spreadsheet opens).
