I have a emachine T2240 with windows xp sp1 and the modem isn't consistent.
Sometimes it will connect to the net fine and other times it takes 2 or 3
times before it connects. I think it's a bad modem but I'm not sure. Anyone
else with this same computer having this problem?

It is more likely to be a problem with the ISP.

Hello

I would replace your modem and it's not your ISP, that rarely
happens that the problem would be your ISP

I find that this happens quite often with inexpensive modems and noisy phone
lines. Try disconnecting any other phones or fax machines from the phone
line and see if that helps. Usually installing a good hardware based modem
takes care of it. If you don't want to replace your modem and have easy
access to the main phone panel you can run a wire directly from the panel to
computer. That usually fixes the problem as well.
