Running winxp Home. Sound was normal up until a week ago, now any sound
coming from computer sounds like it is in a hall (The kids and wife say they
didn't do anything). All drivers are up to date and no conflicts. I know
with my laptop, I can configure the sound to have this effect, but this
problem is with my desktop and I don't have that option with the desktop
computer.

Use System Restore to return Windows to a point well before
the problem became apparent.

Check the settings on your sound card software, for example the AvRack
utility on one of my machines allows yo to choose between many environments
such as concert hall, arena, cave etc.,etc., where as the Intel Audio studio
on another machines has audio presets that may do a similar thing.
