What is dye based ink anyway. What is it made of. Has anyone made this stuff at
home?

Dye is a stain, something that is mixed and dissolved with a 'base'
usually water or alcohol

Pigment are particles suspended in either water or alcohol

To make the stuff is not a matter of just getting the materials, wha
about the viscosity, no doubt other agents are added for lubricatio
etc

It appears to me that ink for an Epson printer is gotta be differen
from that for a Canon for example

Epsons 'squirts the ink' hence 'inkjet printer' whilst Canon 'boil
the ink' which creates a bubble in which the hot air expands an
causes the bubble to burst like a balloon, splattering the pape
hence 'bubble jet'

Ones a cold ink the others a hot ink, how 'universal ink' can do bot
jobs can be argued about til 'the cows come home', but to me there'
just gotta be a difference

Anyone care to mark my homework....

Sorry, a bit off topic, but...

When I retire one of my printers I promise to make my own ink, just for
fun. [DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME WITH A GOOD PRINTER!] I've got planned
cranberry juice for the magenta, blueberry for cyan... However, I'm
still stuck for a strong yellow? I know there's "edible" inks on the
market already. But mine will be drinkable. :-)

Delicious! . . . but I don't recall seeing a strong yellow in
pineapple juice. I may have to add food coloring.

Yellow ink??? I think we all could come up with a suggestion, but I really
don't think you'd want to drink it. OTOH, why not just try food coloring?
The fruit juices would probably have microscopic suspended particles which
would be instant trouble.

Taliesyn - For a more intense yellow you can run it through your kidneys.

In addition, the sugar content would create havoc when superheated in the
print head. Probably comparable to what would happen in the carburator
with the old "sugar in the gas tank" trick to disable a car. (does it also
work with fuel injection?)

I did come across a site that specialised in edible ink, pretty sur
it was something to do with baking....

It's gotta be pointed out that a 'dedicated printer' must be used fo
this purpose, you don't wanna be swapping ink tanks in your printe
just because Er' indoors wants a fancy design doing in edible ink...
it could cause serious health problems

Look at the MSDS sheets (Material Safety Data Sheets) available online
or at the maker's websites (eg. Epson has theirs up) for the full
specifications on what major compounds go into ink. Dye based inks
simply don't have any PIGMENTS, solid particles that have a certain
color (eg. cyan, magenta), to produce the color on the paper. Dye based
inks simply use a colorant instead.
