I could not test this either, kept telling me I pressed a key and cancelled. I tried this as I tried to download a game and it stated my system was not compatible. How can this be fixed??

Here's what I suggest you try to resolve the DirectX error message:
"You Cancelled the test by pressing a key".

Here are the top 2 fixes for that error recently:
- Temporarily Shut off any 3rd party utilities including Antivirus and Firewall
- Look for any keyboard software running in Task Manager and End it.

Still having problems? :-s Read on...

1. You should setup a system restore point before starting:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...temrestore.asp

2. Go to the WindowsUpdate site to install everything under Critical
and Recommended: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

3. Download and (re)install the latest version of DirectX (9.0b):
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...ate_redist.exe

4. Disable Windows Auto-Update while testing DirectX. In Control
Panel / System / Automatic Updates tab, uncheck the top box / OK.

5. Disable any other auto updating program that you might be running on your
computer. Webshots or active desktops could be interfering with these tests.

6. Similar to step 5; Temporarily disable Startup programs one at a time, starting
with Firewall, Antivirus, etc.: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php
You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup...artup_full.htm

Hope that solves it. Take your time, and follow the steps in their listed order. :-)

I have the same problem...my 3d games minimize back to the desktop...the only game that I am able to click on again is Fifa 07, but the rest just minimize to desktop and they wonk stay full screen after I've clicked them..

I've tried all the steps suggested in this thread but with no success..I still get the same message in Dxdiag "you cancelled the test by pressing a key"

I've installed and updated my drivers.........and tried everything even reinstalling the original drivers..but to no avail....I've tried disabling all background programs, including Norton, but no luck...... the frustrating thing is I never made changes to my computer and never had this problem until a couple of weeks ago..all games worked perfectly, then one day I turned on the computer and this all started happening

CPU details

Windows XP
SP2
AMD Duron 1.4
256 mb ram
geforce4 mx 4000
via 4 in 1 (also tried hyperion pro)
Directx 9c

PLEASE HELP...

one other thing that I think may be of importance...I have a Portuguese keyboard (and at around the same time it became disconfigured and I've updated the drivers for it but it remains disconfigured) it has the correct language settings in Control Panel but the hyphens and other stuff no longer works....I'VE PLUGGED OUT THE KEYBOARD WHILE DOING DXDIAG TEST but it still says I cancelled the test by pressing a key

PLease help..I don't want to re format this computer....
