When I try to play a dvd-r on my computer I get a message
saying windows can't read from this disc. The disc plays
fine on my dvd player. I am running Windows XP and my
decoder is WinDVD 5 Gold. It played the first day I
installed WinDVD, but a few days later I tried to play it
again with no luck.

Does your DVD burner support DVD-R or only DVD+R.
