DVD Blank Media not Recognized

I have searched the forums fairly thoroughly and have not come across a
definitive solution for this problem. I have an external Plextor DVD RW
drive. When I insert a blank DVD+R and/or a DVD-R into the drive the blank
media isn't recognized. When I look in My Computer the drive is recognized
as a DVD RW drive when there is no blank DVD disc inserted. When looking in
My Computer the drive is recognized as a standard CD-Rom drive when there is
a blank DVD disc inserted. I have tried all of the suggestions that I've
come across in this newsgroup. Needless to say nothing has resolved my
problem. Does anyone have a definitive solution or at least a consistent
explanation of why this happens. I've noticed that there are quite a few
people with similar problems. Again, my drive is recognized as DVD RW when
no blank DVD disc is inserted, it does have a drive letter assigned to it, it
does read CD and DVD discs that have data on them, and it does read and write
to blank CDs.

I have been having the same problem with my Freecom dvd rw
drive. It worked perfectly when I first bought it, but
since reinstalling windows XP its description in My
Computer changes from DVD RW to CD Rom when a blank DVD is
insterted.
But, it can still read DVDs with files on them, it's only
blank ones that cause the problem.
Hopefully some kind soul here will have a helpfull
suggestion, nothing I have tried so far has helped.

You did enable the record function?
Right-click on the drive letter, choose PROPERTIES|RECORDING tab

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I have done that, but it still thinks that it is a
CD-RW when a blank DVD is inserted, the description changes
from DVD-RW to CD-RW once this is done. It will not write
to DVD anymore.

Now try it with it disabled.

Some (most) mastering programs require that the built in XP burner be disabled. And/or that "auto notification" be enabled.

Are you using Sonic DVD software? I had a similar experience and found out
about something called DLA turned on your drive. Look for it in your drive
properties and see if you have DLA and turn it off..it may be the problem.
Just a hunch.

>I have tried with both enabled and disabled and still no

difference. Nero Info tool shows the drive correctly, and
also correctly shows that a blank dvd rw is inserted in the
drive. But 'my computer' still shows the drive as a cd
drive once a blank dvd is inserted. ASPI are installed
correctly, all software that came with the drive is
installed correctly (Roxio), I'm having no other problems
with nero and it can play dvds without any problem.

But it will not recognize a blank dvd in my computer, and
will no longer write to dvd.

I must be missing something really simple. The DVD RW
will write succesfully to a blank DVD in nero, but when I
insert a blank DVD the name of the drive changes to a CD
R drive in 'my computer', and I can no longer access the
drive in 'my computer'. This means I can't erase/format
dvd rw in 'my computer', nor can I drag and drop files
onto a blank dvd in 'my computer'.

I don't understand why 'my computer' thinks the drive is
only CD R when it can play DVDs normally, and write them
using nero.

You have Roxio AND Nero installed? Packet writing for both also?

Try removing one of the 2 and see what happens, there might be conflicts.
