Hi,

I just unpacked a new Canon 8400F today and found what appears to
be dust or lint under the glass. Before I return it to amazon.com is
there some clever way of removing it?

Thanks,
Gary

Sure. Remove glass & warranty, clean glass, replace dust & glass.

There are cleaning guides for flatbeds floating around. Even if yours
isn't out there, you can probably find enough info to get started. I
don't have any to offer. However, since your scanner is brand new, I
strongly recommend that you ship it back for replacement. It's hard
enough keeping these machines in good working condition; yours
shouldn't handicap you right out of the gate. Plus, sending it back
lets the manufacturer or retailer know that they need to work on their
quality control or storage conditions, improving the situation in the
long run.

The exception would be if the dust or lint is small enough or of a
small enough quantity that it doesn't interfere with your desired use
of the scanner. Then you can keep it and clean it only when the
problem gets worse. That's your subjective judgment call.
(Although...since dust inside the scanner has a clear path to the
scanner optics if it starts floating around, your scans could go from
acceptable to critically flawed all at once.)

Since it's defective, Amazon will probably pay for return shipping.
Send it back.
