i've got an old duron (morgan) 1.3GHz cpu, with an arctic cooling 3
sink, its idle temp is 50C, load about 60C - is this normal for a duron
...? (this is with medium fan speed but high doesn't really help). its
quite a small case with 1 6cm exhaust fan, no sff psu very close to cpu.

Probably case ventilation issue (or a very warm room). What does the
'motherboard' (i.e. inside case) temperature read as? Ideally it should
be within 10-15c of room temperature. 60c isn't actually a problem, as
long as the machine is stable, but much warmer than that could be
getting into lockup temperature range (You'll know when it happens).

Fairly normal, especially given the rough approximation that
motherboard temperature sensors give you. Also nothing really to
worry about, the processor is designed for up to about 90C.

the mobo temp gradually rises to about 40C, about 15 above room ambient.
as does the hard drive which is in a very tight space in the M-atx case.
i'm pretty sure its the cramped case design with not much ventilation,
although the olds cpus did run hotter... my Athlon64 idles at 32C

Are those two in the same room? Was this: "1 6cm exhaust fan, no sff psu
very close to cpu" supposed to read "...on sff psu..."?... i.e. no case
exhaust and only a 6cm P/S exhaust? If so I think that's your answer and
the reason for the difference with the Athlon64 system, especially if the
latter is in a current case - most of the new cases are really good at
dumping heat IME... and also make quite good air cleaners.:-)
