I just put together a duron 1.6 system. I was wondering what is the maximum
acceptable temp range for this chip? at what temp should I have winbond shut
the system down?

Durons have a max die temp of 90c
I'd set the alarm at 80c and shut down at 85c

You shouldn't see temps higher than 70-75 unless you have a case cooling
problem , the ambiant temp is high or you're overclocking with a stock
heatsink.
