Why is it when I duplicate a slide in Powerpoint 2007 it automatically
apply a different layout and the position of all the objects are lost?

After a little research I guess I am asking where can I Remove the
checkmark next to "Automatic layout for inserted objects" in 2007

I'm not seeing that behavior here. How are you duplicating the slide?

Well, I still can't repro it here, even when I add and use the Duplicate
Selected Slides button on the QAT.

I suspect it's reapplying the slide layout or something when it dupes the
slide(s), but it's not happening here. I tried a number of presentations --
some better than others (with respect to following the slide layout or
having direct formatting applied or what have you) -- but I just don't see
it.

There's not an "automatic layout for inserted objects" anymore, so that
shouldn't cause problems.

You know, the slide masters and layouts are quite different in 2007 than
they were in 2003. If you're on the Home tab and click Slide Layout, what do
you see? The name in the grey bar will be the master slide name (e.g.,
Default Design), and the thumbnails are all the individual slide layouts
associated with that master.

off. For some reason on this one machine running 2007 the autoformat
feature is on and I cannot shut it off. My work around is to duplicate
and then hit ctrl-Z ....a pain in the .....

Is the default printer the same on the problem machine and the good machine?

In that case, I'd try making sure the problem machine has a certified
printer driver installed (locally) and set as the default printer. Here's a
list of certified drivers:
