I have an install of WinXP Pro with an AGP video card and a secondary
PCI video card. Everything works fine until I run a game that takes
over one of the video adapters. While the game has exclusive control of
an adapter, it seems to also have exclusive control of the mouse, so I
can't drag the mouse to the other monitor. Is this a common issue? Is
there a way around it? I'd really appreciate any help you can give me,
thanks.

That's one of the restrictions. I'm using a Radeon 64 DDR VIVO as primary
and a Matrox Mystique 220 as secondary but have used other combiniations
including a single dual-head card. All work more or less the same.

The big diff. is between a dual-head and two separate cards.

1) Usually the dual-head cards allow "mirroring" (2nd display can
alternatively show same as first display) which requires something like
Ultramon when using two separate cards
2) Usually dual-head cards have some type of "theatre" mode, e.g. 2nd
display shows video/dvd/etc. fullscreen while it's only a window on primary
display. This can be duplicated (sort of) when using the right software and
two cards, e.g. it'll work on "other" than just the primary display. Just
move window to 2nd display and maximize (WMP seems ok with this).
3) Most dual-head cards allow the second monitor to be a tv/crt/dvi
depending on feature set and included dongle cables comes in package.
