I currently have 512mb memory 2X256 on 1 and 3 slot right now. thinking of
adding another 2x256 memory on 2 and 4 slot the problem is that the new
memory will have a different brand name but it have same speed DDR 333 (PC
2700) as the original memory on my hp machine. Does the memory have to be the
same brand for a dual channel setup? is that setup better than adding one
512mb on slot 3?

Yes, it has to be not only the same but a complete matching pair. It does
make a difference.

It should work fine as long as the two new memory sticks are the same.
They don't have to be the same as the original. I started with 2x512 MB
memory sticks in my computer and later added 2x1GB memory sticks and it
kept operating in dual channel mode.
