I wish to re-install XP Pro on a 250 GB Hard Drive that consists of two
partitions. I could not find a built-in partitioning facility in XP and so I
actually installed Vista on my 'c' Drive and then created the second
partition from within Vista.
I wish to re-install XP Pro onto the new freshly-formatted partition and I
have tried it several times. Immediately XP Setup detects the Vista
installation, it aborts with a message saying the OS already installed is
newer than the XP I am trying to install. I have even tried Microsoft
Virtual PC. I honestly don't know which OS Virtual PC 2007 was designed for,
but it doesn't work on Vista and doesn't work on XP. Everything looks good -
the Virtual PC starts but when running it on Vista and attempting a virtual
installation of XP Pro, the XP Setup freezes within a minute or so of
beginning.
All I want is a dual-boot configuration with Vista and Windows XP Pro but it
seems so difficult to achieve this

The recommended path is to install the older OS first, XP, then the newer,
Vista, but it can be done the other way around. How are you trying to
install XP, by running the CD from within Vista? You should boot from the
XP CD. I know of no reason why it won't install to a different partition in
this scenario.

After installing XP, the Vista boot files will have been removed from the
system partition, so Vista won't boot. You'll need to restore the Vista
boot files. Easiest way is to use VistaBootPro.

As to Virtual PC 2007 AFAIK it runs on both XP and Vista, and it's commonly
used to run XP on Vista. I haven't used it though so I can't give you any
info on how to set it up.

Looks like you have difficulties in reading and searching... the dual
boot XP - Vista has been described and discussed very many times, indeed.

Lots of work re-installing XP Pro & all apps + settings.

Maybe u can clone it to 2nd partition on Vista HDD & handle booting
with W boot manager or 3rd party 1 (PMagic)

I did that(my 1st) to dual boot XP using PMagic7($20 now).

you are trying to install XP while still running in Vista.
to install xp you need to boot from the CD and then direct it to install to the desired partition.

since you are installing an older windows version SECOND, it will wipe out the Vista boot information on the "C" drive.
its not too big a deal as VistaBootPro has the options when run from XP to correct the Vista boot loader information creating a duel boot between Vista and XP.

the easiest way to accomplish your dual boot with XP and Vista is to install XP first followed by Vista. Vista will then create the dual boot information for you automatically.
