Dual booting with Windows XP and Windows 98SE

I've recently installed Windows XP Pro and found some of
my applications don't work or work erratically, even in
Compatibility Mode. To compensate I want to install
Windows 98 on an unused partition in Dual-boot mode, but
MS support pages recommend installing 98 first and then
XP. That would disrupt my present setup. What will happen
if I leave XP as is, and just install 98 onto the open
partition?
Need help.
Thanks.

Thanks for the help. I went to the Doug Knox website and
downloaded the instructions. I tried the technique but
failed to even install Win98. With the Win98 CD in the
drive, setup went thru the scandisk phase and at the
start of setup, got an error message: "Setup Detection
Message. Message SU0013. Setup cannot create files in
your startup drive and cannot set up Windows 98. If you
have HPFS or NTFS you must create a boot partition...
etc." I have two hard drives with two partitions on each.
60Gig drive has two 30 Gig partitions and is primary
master. 80 Gig drive is primary slave and has 20 Gig and
60 Gig partitions. I'm trying to install Win98 on the 20
Gig slave partition. WinXP is installed on the first
partition of the Primary Master drive. All are FAT32
partitions. The 20 Gig partition is the active (bootable)
one on that drive. Don't know what to do. What is HPFS?

Well, Doug Knox's procedure is exactly what you are trying to do. And
I have used his procedures to fix a Win98/WinXP dual boot system, so I
trust his advice. The message you are getting sure sounds like you are
trying to install Win98 on an NTFS partition.
