I tried to do this on my system, but after the repair re-booted the
system, I got a message that a file (asmc ?) could not be found on the
XP CDROM and wanted to know where to find it. It did not seem to want
to read the XP CD. Could the problem be that I have a DVD writer as my
primary drive and I booted from XP CD in the secondary CD-ROM drive?
Could XP be trying to read the other drive?

You could change the boot up name and sequence on boot.ini or right click my computer, properties, advanced -- on the startup and recovery, settings then edit.
