Dual boot with XP Home Edition

Hello, I recently bought a Compaq Presario notebook that
came with XP Home Edition. I need to run SQL Server on the
laptop. Since XP Home Edition will not support SQL Server
I need to install Window 2000 Server in a dual boot
scenario. I have done this many times with other Windows
Operating systems (I have never used XP Home Edition).
When I put in the Windows 2000 Server CD I get the
following message - "This CD-ROM is from an older version
of Windows than the one your are presently using. Setup
functionality from this disk will be disabled"

Does anyone know how I can set up this dual boot scenario?

Thanks - Brad

Hi Brad,

MVP Doug Knox has a very well explained webpage on how to install Windows
2000 after you have installed XP. You may want to visit the following page:

Anando - Excellent document. One problem I now have. The
document says to install Win2K into a seperate partition.
My Compaq note book has one 60gb C: partition. There is
about 50gb free although it is allocated to the C:
partition. Is there an easy way to carve away about 30gb
and create a D: partition? Then I can install Win2K in
the new partition.

Hi Brad,

Easy. You need a third party partitioning program which will
non-destructively create a second partition. I personally use BootitNG
(www.bootitng.com) The instructions are clear and very easy to use. Do post
back if you have any doubts.

The only way you can create, delete, resize or merge existing partitions,
and not harm your existing Windows installation, is to purchase and use
a third-party partitioning program such as Partition Magic 8.

OK, I'll check out bootitNG. It looks like I can download
this product. Is it free? My problem right now is that
my "latest and greatest" laptop comes without a floppy
drive. I'll have to figure something out since bootitNG
will probably need to boot from a floppy.

No, you can also create a bootable CD with BootitiNG. BootitNG is a
shareware program but it has no limitations, so you can use all of its
features.
