because you installed winxp
after vista, you performed
a system downgrade.
basically, the proper order
would have been to install
winxp first, then install vista
secondly.
even though you mentioned
you had not issues before,
you experienced a fluke that
simply caught up to you now.

exercise is to install virtual
pc in vista, then install winxp
in virtual pc.
