Dual Boot upgrade Issues

Hello,

I have been working on a NEC Versa SXi laptop w/ Win 98 OEM
installation. I compromised on an upgrade somtime ago by
creating a dual boot system w/ Win 2000 Professional, no
reformating of disk or creation of new volumes. This to get
around some compatibility problems w/ 2000 Professional.

Now, my Win 98 has failed or is corrupted, I would like to
upgrade the whole system to a single Win 2000 Professional
O/S, but when I insert the 2K disk to attempt an upgrade
only the 2K O/S is seen and the options are for repair or
installation only.

Could someone suggest how I might tackle this, so that the
whole system runs under a single 2000 Professional
operating system.
Thanks

If you installed Win 2k to the same drive or partition,
setup will not see an upgradable OS. If you have a full
version of Win 2k Pro , you would get better performance
by formatting the drive, installing just win 2k , and the
restoring from backup.

Also if you are booting from cd , you will not get an
option to upgrade. Upgrades have to be initiated while in
Windows.

You could just delete the folder for windows 98 ( most
likely c:\windows ) Then edit the line in the boot.ini
for Windows 98. The boot.ini is located in the root of C.
You will need to have folder options set to view hidden
files and folders. Open it up in notepad and remove the
line that points to Windows 98.

Its going to look something like this :

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows 98" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft
Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

Just take out

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows 98" /fastdetect

then change the default line to
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT

Hope this helps !

Thanks, one other question - will it be possible to retain the registry
settings under Win 98 so that I can copy / import them into Win2K Pro
and not have to reinstall programs installed under Win 98. And how can
this copying or importation best be done, if at all possible.
Thanks again!

I deleted c:\WINDOWS then proceeded to edit the boot.ini file, all I
found in it was :
[boot loader]
timeout=60
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows"

No reference to the Win98 rawdisk partition sharing - could that absence
be the cause of my original problem - "failing to boot". If so could
there still be a corrective step? the Win98 folder is still in the
Trash, not yet 'Trashed' (deleted from recycle bin)

Another observation, although Win98 has been deleted from the C Drive
the boot selection option of this O/S still comes up after the Splash
Screen.

Thanks
