I purchased a hp pavilion with AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core 4200+ with 1 gig
of ddr2-4200. it came with vista home premium. vista was not compatible with
satellite internet. I had to dump vista and purchase xp pro. now all works
fine. I have added another hard drive and I was wondering if I could do a
dual boot with xp on 1 drive and vista on another drive? there seems to be
several problems with vista but I would like to play with it for a while to
make my own decision.
this is the first computer with dual processors. does xp pro and vista home
premium support dual processors? I cross posted this to both xp and vista
groups to get collective answers.

Yes, you can dual boot Windows XP and Vista, just launch Vista setup in XP,
during the install wizard, click Custom and select the drive on which you
would like to install Vist. Windows Vista Home Premium does not support dual
core processors. Dual Core processors are only supported in Vista Business,
Enterprise and Ultimate editions.

You can dual boot Windows XP and Windows Vista. Simply start the Vista
installation, and point it to the second (new) hard drive to install. When
the installation is complete, you will be given the option (when starting
your computer) which version of Windows you want to load.

Both XP and Vista support dual processors. However, the key to getting
benefit from dual processors is to have programs that are designed for such.

I have done that already. I installed XP Pro on my box
(P4-2.6Ghz/800FSB-1.5GB PC3200/256MB BioStar AGP w/NVidia 6200 chip) first
and installed a second drive for Vista. XP is on an 80GB EIDE and Vista is
on a 250GB SATA HDD.
It works very similar to my other boxes that dual boot ME/XP.
I get a menu at boot that allows me to pick which OS to boot to.
With a clean install of both XP Pro/SP2 and Vista Ultimate on the same
hardare, XP Pro boots 15 seconds quicker.
After I get Office XP and a few other programs installed, we'll see which is
quicker.

You and Kurosh (who posted after you) appear to be saying different
things about Vista and dual core processors! When you say Vista Home
Premium does not support dual core processors which you do you mean?
That Home Premium does not work with a dual core processor or that
it only uses a single core of the dual core?

All Editions of Vista support dual-core processors, and processors with
hyperthreading. Home Basic and Home Premium only support one *physical*
processor installed on a single socket. A dual-core processor is one
*physical* processor, that is installed on one physical socket.

This is very misleading. Although both XP and Vista support dual processors,
only some versions of each of them do--XP Professional and MCE, and Vista
Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate. Home versions of both operating systems
are limited to a single processor.

However, *all* versions* of both XP and Vista support dual-core processors.

Others have shown you how to install Vista and get the Microsoft dual
boot configuration. However there is a danger in doing it this way,
as Windows XP will destroy the Vista System Restore points if it can
see the drive.

Your best bet is to use a third party boot manager program, such as
BootItNG from www.bootitng.com and configure it so that the
non-booting operating system partition is always hidden. That way XP
can't destroy or contaminate the Vista files and vice-versa.

thanks everyone for the input and answers. one quick question my hp had
factory installed vista. I dumped it and installed xp pro. can I install
vista from the hp restore disks to the second drive without destroying the
xp installation? I can't afford to lose my data on the xp drive. BTW the xp
install is on the c drive and the vista install will be on the e drive as
the DVD is on the d drive.
