Hi all,
I have a situation last weekend.
For quite a while, I have been using Win98 and only so as the
applications that's been used doesn't work on Win2000/XP. For all
other purpose sometime ago added a smaller drive for XP. So the Win98
is on C and XP on D and C is Master by jumper setting.
Finally I received upgrade to old application to run on XP and so
willing to use the D drive exclusively and use present C drive as a
common external drive.
Please let me know how to detach the first drive and boot XP directly
from it's drive?

1. Copy the hidden files c:\ntldr, c:\ntdetect.com and c:\boot.ini to d:\.
2. Click Start / Run / notepad D:\boot.ini{OK}
3. There are two lines that contain this string:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
On both of them change rdisk(1) to rdisk(0).
4. Remove the line that refers to Win98, then save and close the file.
5. Click Start / Run / diskmgmt.msc.
6. Right-click the WinXP partition, then mark is as active.
7. Turn off the machine and disconnect the Win98 disk.
8. Jumper the WinXP disk so that it becomes the primary master.
9. Launch Win9x, then click Start / Run / cmd {OK}
If the drive letter you see is something other than D:, post again.

Step #8 is unnecessary because by being the only HD in the system,
it will take the place of the old disk in the Hard Drive Boot Order
by default and it will become "rdisk(0)" in the boot.ini menu. (But
the OP might as well do step #8 just to keep from confusing himself.)
