If it's not, I apologise and could someone advise me on an appropriate
group to post in

Please could some one tell me if there is a sound DSP chip on all
motherboards and if there is, has it been known to fail?
Also if a DSP chip exists on a motherboard, and an external sound card is
used, does sound digital signal processing still depend on this DSP chip on
the mainboard, even though on-board sound is disabled in the BIOS?

All motherboards do not have a DSP or a sound system on the MBD. Some do,
some don't
Dependency would depend as much on the driver software as anything else.
Even though the BIOS support is "disabled", it's possible for windows to
detect the on board hardware. Usually you can lock out the drivers for a
particuliar MBD feature such as a sound system in windows device manager.
This might be part of your problem, in that windows configured itself with
the sound system active. It may still see the sound system, even though the
BIOS support is turned off.
