Drop down list of drives - My Computer Windows XP Professional

Recently, when I select the drop down address bar, or any left side button
indicating a location, it takes 1+ minutes for a search(?) of my computer
before I can see a list (hour glass appears while I wait). This occurs at
'My Computer' and every MSOffice application. What's up; how do I fix this?
