Driver not found for generic USB CDC device

I'm plugging in a standard USB to serial controller to a laptop USB port. The
instructions (for the controller) claim that XP has a generic CDC driver that
will run the device. Windows finds the hardware, lists it as "USB CDC",
assigns it a COM port, but can't find a driver to use as a default.

My question is: how can I check that my laptop actually has the default CDC
driver, and if not is there a site I can download it from?

Many thanks.

Is this the thing you're asking about?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

(Google search on "USB CDC")
