I need to attach a serial device to one of the USB ports
on my laptop. QUESTION: Do I need a generic driver so
that the USB port "recognizes" the serial connection?
MORE INFO: I am actually attaching to a small hub that
only offers a 9-pin serial connection. (It's proprietary
to my wife's court reporting hardware/software. Don't
bother, I already know it's screwy.) Setup is as follows:
1. Laptop is connected to the stenograph machine (the
court reporters "typewriter") via a serial cable (and is
connected to my only serial port).
2. A 4-port hub that also has a serial connection needs
to be connected to the laptop so that the lawyers can
view what she is typing. (She types on the stenograph
machine, it is converted by the software on the laptop
into readable text, and then it is sent out to anyone who
is connected to the 4-port hub.)
Since there is only one serial port available on the
laptop, I was hoping to just use a USB to serial adapter
cable, which I have purchased. However, it doesn't seem
to work, and so I was wondering if I just need an
adapter?
Sorry for the longwinded explanation...
