      16th Oct 2003
im running sbs 2000 and i configured it for dial up use
with a cnet 56k modem. everything was working o.k. but
the connection speed wasnt that great so i tried another
driver. rebooted and the system just freezes after i
login... doesnt even make it to the desktop. i i try
another modem (an intel) modem system boots finds the
modem and then i go to install the driver and right at he
end of the driver install... blue screen hardware failure
and i get a stop error. if i put the other modem back in
it does the same as b4. somethings wrong how do i clean
out all the old modem drivers totally.

Delete them. Just make sure you know which files they are. "Uninstall" often
doesn't work as it should.

Then use regedit, just to make sure -- delete the references to the modem
driver(s). But read up on how to use it first. If you have doubts about your
ability to use it safely, _don't use it._

And you can't increase line speed by using another driver. Use _only_ the
driver for your OS and modem model. Connection speed depends on so many
factors out there (not in your system) that it's futile to mess with your
system trying to up the connection speed. Except for one thing: experiment
with the COM port's speed setting. For some modems the highest port speed
works better, for some the lower one (57200) works better. I can't find any
reason for the differences, I've just noticed that it happens.
