Driver compatibility

My laptop came with winXP, I bought it few days ago.
I try to install, a USB port replicator but it don't
recognized it although I have the latest software from the
manufacturer Targus. I try to install my external mobile
hard disk, It goes to the system as it is present there
but not on windows explorer. I don't get any error message
during the installation. I never face this kind of
problems before as I was using windows 2000 professional
with service pack 4.

Urgent help needed
