I have many times installed and uninstalled a certain hardware and I suspect
that the driver I choose when the new hardware is detected is not the same
driver that gets installed. Is there a driver cache (besides the
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers folder) which you can remove cached drivers from?
I noticed this problem when I selected a certain driver, but the driver
required a certain .sys file which was at another location which was not
available at that moment.

You can try looking into %windir%/system32/dllcache

dllcache folder is a hidden folder.

Thanks
