drive that supports dvd + r dual layer discs, that doesn't !

i have a disc drive that is supposed to be able to use 8.5 gig discs to
record when required but it seems only to recognise 4.7 or cd

And you're using the special dual-layer dvd blanks? If so, contact the drive
mftr.'s tech support.
