Drive space error

Recently I've noticed that my hard drive does not accurately report the
"disk free space". One time it will say 15gb free, then a few minutes later
13gb, even though I've not loaded anything, and the "swap" file
(pagefile.sys) seldom goes over 1gb. And when I've got a large video file of
4gb loaded, and it says 11gb free, then I delete the video file and it still
says 11gb free even after rebooting! Sometimes it seems to get stuck on an
amount of space for days, regardless of what I do. What might be causing
this?
