With the following drives, what is the best ide channel order? And Why?

C: Maxtor 60gig ATA133 7200rpm
D: WD 20gig ATA66 5600rpm (file storage)
E: Sony DVDROM DDU1621
F: BTC DVDRW IDE1008

I would:

IDE 1 Master - Operating system hard drive
IDE 1 Slave - DVD

IDE 2 Master - DVDRW
IDE 2 Slave - WD Hard drive 20 gig

Having the hard drives on seperate ide's can help in file copying.

I have found that most burners perform better on Master setting. Also if you
are burning a DVD the hard drive and DVD Burner are sending data through
seperate ide cables.

I'm going to toss out a suggestion:

IDE 1 Master - OS Hard Drive
IDE 1 Slave - WD Hard Drive
IDE 2 Master - DVDRW
IDE 2 Slave - DVD ROM

I would check and see if your motherboard supports RAID configuration
since that will net you the performance increase and leave everything
else unaffected. You can often run into problems with having a HD as a
slave to a DVD Burner such as the HD getting stuck in DMA Mode 2

Even without RAID, it would still be advisable to put the Hard Drives on
the Primary (IDE 1) Controller.

Often speculated very rarely considered. Look to the following and where
they are located onb your PC.

1. Operating System 'Program' Files
2. Swap File
3. Application 'Program' Files
4. Data
5. I/O Information [display, printer, comms etc] generated during the
operation of the PC.

Now consider where these particular files are located in your computer.

Are they on your:
IDE 1 - Primary Master Hard Drive [C Drive] or Primary Slave Hard Drive [D
Drive] or
IDE 2 Secondary Master Hard Drive [E Drive] or Secondary Slave Hard Drive
[E Drive]

Then also consider the performance of the specific drive: RPM, Seek Time,
Data Transfer, buffer etc.

What you need to do is balance the performance so that the CPU isn't waiting
for things to do: reading files off a DVD Video takes time it is slow,
comparative to a HDD and needs to go into Memory and then be processed.

Running a spreadsheet and multiplying a few rows of numbers is a quick
process comparatively where just a few bytes are transferred off the HDD or
in memory as you performa the maths.

Firing a weapon during a fight simulation, running a 3 D game with surround
sound: well that takes a lot more work, processing, memory and data movemnet.

So think about what you do and where you store the information.

Organise your PC better - for IDE only Devices I'd suggest:
IDE1 - Primary Master - C Drive - Windows: Programme Files
IDE1 - Primary Slave - E Drive - Optical Device - Burner
IDE2 - Secondary Master - D Drive - All Data Files and Swap File - Tempry
Storage for Optical Burner [CD or DVD Files]
IDE2 - Secondary Slave - Optical Device - Reader

Well, I can see my suggestion does not quite work for systems using a
swapfile (which I don't). But I would at least make the HD's Masters
and Optical drives Slaves. The Burner on a separate controller from the
drive the data is being copied from will be best.

The reason I suggestes the WD on ide 2 as slave is because it is only used
to store data. If it were to have program files on it I would put it as
Master on ide 2.

Truth is, any configuration will work assuming you set the jumpers
correctly. A lot of how you want to set it up depends on the function
of each device

I think it is great that XP is able to handle just about anything you
can throw at it like this. It can even boot off the secondary slave if
you wanted it to.

Err....how many service packs have YOU counted so far?! lol

I just wish it could do the SIMPLE things...like keep my folder
configurations...instead of making me reset them every time.

Yup...great little operating system! lol

And, yes...I've tweaked the registry. Still doesn't help.
