Drive and User Restrictions

I am suddenly getting an error message in the Administrator account that says
"this operaton has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this
computer. Please contact your system administrator." This occurs when I try
to access Explore, or Administrative Tools in the Control Panel. In
addition, the C drive is no longer visible when I try to open or save files.

This only occurs to the Administrator account. The only thing that has
changed lately is that I recently installed the new version of Norton
Systemworks and Personal Firewall. I can't find anything addressing this
problem at Norton (Symantec) or Microsoft.

Best regards, and thanks for any help you can provide.

You mean you can logon as a regular user and there are no similar
restrictions?? Are you using XP Pro or XP Home and is this an Active
Directory domain computer?? Can you run regedit or access the command
prompt? Did this happen right after installing Norton or at a later
me? --- Steve

Steve,

Yes, I can logon as a regular user and there are no restrictions. I can see
and access the C: drive. I have XP Home with SP2, but I don't know what
Active Directory is. THis is simply a home/home office PC with separate
logins for me, my wife and kids.

I can access regedit and command prompt, however Current_User under regedit
is difficult to navigate in - folders won't open automatically. I don't know
if it happened when right after installation or not, it required a reboot and
I didn't happen to try to access the drives until the next day.

I have run Antivirus with up-to-date definitions, also SpyBot, Ad-Aware, and
System Mechanic. Nothing was found. I also posted this issue at Symantec,
no reply yet.

I have avoided uninstalling Systemworks while trying to understand what
happened first.

Thanks for your interest,

Carey

Wow is that bizarre in that it affects the administrator account and not the
others. If you are able to create another user account and add it to the
local administrators group try that to see if it is based on group
membership or unique to the administrators account. The "true" administrator
account in XP Home is only available in Safe Mode so if you have not tried
that yet boot into Safe Mode to see if the restriction still apply to the
built in administrator account if you have not tried that yet. I tend to
believe it is not related to SystemWorks unless it prompted you to restrict
certain actions during installation and you told it to do so. --- Steve
