My company is updating a website and has stuck me with the job. I am a DB
guy, about HTML i know from nothing.

Reading here suggests that it would be a bad idea to use both Dreamweaver
and FP on the same website. We bought both because the boss wants moving
video and banners and feels FP can't do those.

So, if use both programs will one corrupt the files of the other?

If the site uses FP Server extensions for anything, yes, but it doesn't
really corrupt files - it just breaks the connection between the file and
the Server Extensions, which does break the functionality.

Whichever way you go, though, PLEASE take the time to read about (and learn
some) HTML and CSS. It'll make your climb ever so much easier.

As Murray said, you can use both. Avoid the server extensions if possible.
Also, if your web server has the FP Sever Extensions installed you publish
through DreamWeaver you need to make sure that you cloak any of the _vti
directories that appear in the web. Cloaking them will prevent DreameWeaver
from trying to publish those files to the server. It often avoids a lot of
issues though if you publish through FrontPage if your server has the FP
Server Extensions enabled.

As far as animation and video, both programs can add them into a web page
without problem. What your boss may have missed is the fact that neither of
these tools can actually create a moving video. For that you'll need
something such as Macromedia Flash to create a Flash animation. Both FP and
DreamWeaver can easily insert the resultant animation into the page.

Yes, Mark home grown movies are what she wants. She imagines that because i
know a little (very little) Access and created an application i can do a
website in my sleep. So she got the whole DW, Flash, Fireworks, etc. package.
I told her I would have to learn a whole different language but she still
thinks this is no big deal and I'll have cars racing across the screen by
noon next. Sure I will!

By extensions u mean the DOS extension on the file name? I checked and yes
the server supports FP extensions. It will also support accessing the tables
in my application. Once i figure out how to do that.

So, u guys r telling me i can do all this -- if and when I learn how, right?
And other than making movies it really doesn't matter much which program i
use?

What do you mean by "FP can't "do" those - if you mean create them, then yes
it can't "do" that.
But you can insert animation and videos into Frontpage-created webpages.

Editing with both is fine. Just refresh FrontPage before you deploy.
Deploying from both is okay, as long as you are not using the FP extension
bits (site map, shared borders, web bots, etc.), as DW

No. By FP Server extensions we mean the programs that reside on the server
and mediate some of the special functions you can use in FP, like form
processing, and guestbooks, and other stuff. Using DW to upload files (with
FTP, naturally) to a FP site that uses FPSEs (server extensions) will break
that SE functionality (except for Mark Fitzpatrick's excellent suggestion
which I haven't verified).
